COOPS2009 NOTES FOR MS-138:
Courtesy of The Two Daves
Yet another very watchable film. They were on form this tour.
EC30 tapes transferred to PC via a Panasonic NV-W1 Professional triple standard vhs machine. Files authored to DVD with Tempgenc DVD Works Author 4
Third night of his third and final residency (so far) at Hammersmith. Bob clearly wants to play though and seems reluctant to finish many of the songs.
Remember even if you have some of the Daves’ films already that at best your copies will be 2 generations poorer than anything in the Masters series, so get em all. These will be with original sound though many will feature as sound upgrades eventually with my two mates Yassou and Madhasse helping out.

LB NOTES FOR LB-1463:
Legendary Tapers Series #6
9 February 1993: London
Off-master copy of a recording by LTB (see also #2 in the series) from the Hammersmith residency in 1993; (corrected later not to be recorded by LTB, but by LTA)
excellent sound; different recording than bootleg Just Like Zimmerman LB-2779 based on different crowd at end of d2t1; in comparison that one has hiss, hum, and is harsher; pop d1t8 4:11 caused by discontinuity.
Notes for LB-5895 attribute the recording to LTA with the following lineage: legendary taper A, ?? -> portable DATrecorder - clone -> (digital transfer) m-audio delta audiophile 2496 -> Wavelab -> tlh

PAL

DIFFERENCES & IMPROVEMENTS OVER D503/D503.su:
-used file sourced from the master PAL tape; D503/D503.su are NTSC transfers from PAL
tape copied on a standalone DVD player)
-more natural selection of stills

PERFORMANCE/HIGHLIGHTS/SPECIAL MOMENTS:
-appearance of Dave Stewart on “Highway 61 Revisited”
-Dylan’s extensive use of the acoustic guitar
-Dylan’s thumb + forefinger acoustic and electric guitar technique
-long drawn out endings to some songs, e.g., “The Times They Are A-Changin”
-highly emotional singing, especially on “Every Grain Of Sand” and “It Ain’t Me,
Babe”
-tart & tasty harp especially on “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “It Ain’t Me, Babe”
-Bucky Baxter’s electric mandolin on “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”
-terrific leads by J.J. Jackson, especially on “Ballad Of A Thin Man”
-smoky performance of “I And I” highlighted by Winston Watson’s drumming
-quite enthusiastic audience
-rather distracting special effects added by filmer (see Disc 2 setlist details)

DISTANCE/POSITION: 8-15 (5˙ left of center balcony; effective zooming and panning; focus on Dylan during sing with shots of others during instrumentals)

AUDIO: 15 (excellent LTA/LB-1463 recording)

STEADINESS: 12 (filmer kept it quite steady except occasionally between songs and when audience members moved)

HEADS/OBSTRUCTIONS: 13 (mostly unobstructed except far left side on long shots blocking J.J. Jackson)

FOCUS: 12 (very good color and adequate light; focus soft and grainy on close-ups)

EDITING: stills used for missing parts; tape had a pause at the start of “Every Grain Of Sand plus vertical control issue; vertical control issue before final song; brief cuts had to added before and during some songs to maintain a/v sync; filmer incorporated some distracting special effects at the end of Disc 2 (see setlist details)
