D337.suu THIRD TIME AROUND

Well now, we've been here before with D174.su and D174.suu - a second upgrade that, while perfectly fine in itself, wasn't really an advance on the first. Though I no longer have D337.su to compare, it sounds to me as though the upgrade audio source used for that and D337.suu is one and the same. However, in a review of D337.su, I wrote:

Despite so much missing film ... author Cineman gives us the entire concert in top-notch audio (though is it possible to lay it on a bit louder, G?)

and, lo and behold, where D337.suu scores over its forerunner is right there, in the strong sweet presence of a sublime audio track now laid on just so. My advice, then, is the same as it was with those two LA '98s: if you already have the first upgrade, then trading up to the second probably isn't necessary, though, if you have neither one, then, yes, target D337.suu for sure.

For gig/performance info, see D337 and D337.su reviews. And finally, à propos of nothing much, the second of that pair unexpectedly brought out of the woodwork the original video-taper and contact with him led, through his generosity, to Cineman acquiring the video master. So why isn't it deployed here, ticking D337.suu's last box and so boosting it into five star country? Because Father Time, it transpired, has done for it, which serves once again to remind us all of the importance of the work that Ace and others like him do. Of course it's mainline fun, bringing hours of harmless pleasure to dozens of tragic* people, but it's documentation, restoration and preservation too, timely, vital and worthy of a medium large medal. The George Cross, maybe?

THANKS Catwoman
STARS A solid four, warmly recommended.
