DVDylan ID: | D1197.2 |
Recording type: | Audience |
City/Venue: | Memphis, TN, USA/Tom Lee Stage, Beale Street Festival |
Date: | Friday, 2nd May 1997 |
NOTE: The second camera source had to be converted from NTSC format to PAL to match the format of the first camera source (D1197).
Rating: While better than D1197, which rates 4-Stars, this is not quite 5-Stars, although it might be a 'must-have,' depending on how you define 'must-have.' If you have it, you must have it, right? So, what the hell: 5 Stars!

PERFORMANCE/HIGHLIGHTS/SPECIAL MOMENTS:
-wild and appreciative crowd (encore break audio left intact)
-great fiddle by Campbell on “Friend Of The Devil”
-nice mandolin by Baxter on “Tangled Up In Blue”
-fine guitar-playing by Dylan on “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”
-terrific lead by Campbell on “All Along The Watchtower”
-strong delivery of “Seeing the Real You At Last” and “This Wheel's On Fire”
-moving harmonies by Campbell & Baxter on chorus of “Forever Young”
DISTANCE/POSITION:
MS-258/D1197: 8-15 (Center floor; crowd gets in way of filmer who does his best to stay focused on Dylan; not much panning opportunity, but zooms in and out afford closeups of Dylan and views of band members and occasionally the whole band)
D1091: 8-10 (Left rear 70˙with good views of Dylan, Garnier and Baxter)
AUDIO: 12 (B+) (LB-3375) (audio quite clear and distinct but a little muffled)
STEADINESS:
MS-258/D1197: 5 (filmer with a hand-held camera in the midst of a wild crowd)
D1091: 8
HEADS/OBSTRUCTIONS:
MS-258/D1197: 5 (filmer tries to keep shot between bodies in front, but lots of movement make it difficult to avoid obstructions)
D1091: 8
FOCUS:
MS-258/D1197: 14 (excellent color, light and focus)
D1091: 5 (this was sourced from a DVD that itself was sourced from the master tape, but was converted to PAL format to match the format of the other footage; fair quality & adequate light; very soft focus)
EDITING: Missing songs and parts of MS-258/D1197 replaced with footage from D1091 where available; other missing songs or defective parts filled with stills where feasible; camera seems to have been paused at some points thus requiring stills for a/v sync; occasional pixellation problems were left untouched

COOPS2009 NOTES ON MS-258 (D1197):
This is a first, to JB goes the honour of being the first person to privately supply me with master recordings of a show he filmed but never circulated. This is what the Masters Series is for - the preservation of audience videos in the best possible quality. This is from the master copy, but, as the sound was bad, it has been once again expertly replaced by my friend Yassou whose detailed analysis is in the description. Now, I have many many episodes of the Masters Series waiting for upload, but this deserved to jump the cheque which is why the Serial number is so far ahead of the rest.
